I VERBI RIFLESSIVI
REFLEXIVE VERBS
I verbi riflessivi esprimono una azione il cui effetto ricade sul soggetto, anziché sul complemento oggetto. I verbi riflessivi sono sempre accompagnati da un pronome riflessivo (mi, ti, si, ci, vi, si).
esempio - Io mi lavo i denti (cioè io lavo i denti a me stesso)
Reflexive verbs express an action whose effect falls on the subject, instead of the direct object. Reflexive verbs are always accompanied by a reflexive pronoun (mi, ti, si, ci, vi, si).
Ex: Io mi lavo i denti (I brush my teeth ---> I brush my teeth to myself)
Reflexive verbs can be transitive verbs (which means they have a direct object) and they fall on the verb subject. For example, to wash, to brush, to dress, are used as both transitive verb (ex: I brush my daughter's hair) or and reflexive verb (I brush my hair).
Reflexive verbs can also have reciprocal value: fore example, the sentence "the children are glaring at each other" means that the children are staring at each other, so the action is performed by all the children. To create the infinitive form for reflexive verbs, you have to add the reflexive pronouns to the verb ending.
Reflexive verbs are usually confused with pronominal verbs: their conjugation is just the same as the reflexive noun conjugation. Also in this case, the verb is always accompanied by a reflexive pronoun, even though it doesn't perform any sintactic role (it's neither a direct object, nor an indirect object). Some pronominal verbs are: to regret, to realise, to move (emotional reaction), to get up etc...
